Footprints of Kupe

Located on the shores of the Hokianga Harbour in Opononi, Northland, Manea – Footprints of Kupe is one of the Far North’s most significant cultural and tourism developments. The museum and cultural experience shares the story of Kupe and Te Hokianga-nui-a-Kupe through immersive storytelling, sculpture, architecture and interactive experiences, creating a major landmark destination for the region.

NMI was proud to be involved in delivering a wide range of structural steel and architectural metalwork packages throughout the project. Working alongside the wider construction team, the goal was to fabricate and install steelwork that not only met the structural requirements of the build, but also complemented the strong architectural and cultural design elements throughout the site.

Our scope of works included:

• Structural steel fabrication and installation
• Corten steel cladding to sections of the building exterior
• Custom tapered corten steel planters
• Architectural steel handrails
• Custom fabricated heavy-duty steel bases for sculptures and artwork
• Fabrication of custom corten waka sculptures

A major feature of the project was the use of weathering corten steel throughout the development. The natural aged finish of the corten tied in with the surrounding Hokianga landscape and gave the project a unique appearance that will continue to evolve over time. Many of the components were custom fabricated specifically for the site, requiring detailed workshop drawings, precise fabrication and careful coordination during installation.

From structural steel through to bespoke architectural metalwork, this was a unique Northland project that showcased a combination of heavy-duty fabrication, custom steelwork and detailed finishing. We’re proud to have contributed to a landmark cultural attraction in Opononi that will be enjoyed by locals and visitors for generations to come.
